Digital Work Card: Implementation and Implications

The implementation of the Digital Work Card is an important step towards transparency and rational management of working time in Greece. 2024 is characterized by the universal application of this measure, which was established by Law 4808/2021 on Labor Protection.

Implementation and inspections

The implementation process began gradually from 2023, initially covering specific categories of businesses such as banks and large supermarkets. From July 1, 2024, controls and the imposition of fines on industries and retail businesses have been intensified, in order to ensure compliance (Taxheaven) (enikonomia.gr).

Expansion into New Industries

On September 1, 2024, the pilot application of the Digital Work Card in tourism will begin, enhancing transparency and compliance in one of the most important sectors of the Greek economy (ERT News). From 1 January 2025, the use of the card becomes mandatory for all businesses, including the industrial and retail sectors (enikonomia.gr). Businesses have until the end of the year to adopt the Digital Work Card.

Consequences and Fines

The Digital Work Card ensures the observance of the schedule and the recording of overtime in real time, preventing violations and irregularities. In cases where the actual employment does not match the card data, strict fines are imposed, which reach up to 10,500 euros per employee (Eretikos.gr) (Dnews).

Benefits and Challenges

The application of the Digital Work Card offers multiple benefits for the labor market. It ensures workers’ rights, strengthens healthy competition and ensures the sustainability of the insurance system. At the same time, the success of the measure requires continuous cooperation and dialogue between the Ministry of Labor and the business community to address potential problems during its implementation (Ψηφιακή Κάρτα Εργασίας) (Eretikos.gr).

The Digital Work Card is an innovation that is coming to radically change the Greek labor market, promoting digitization and transparency.
